As I mentioned here, my marathon training has come to a complete standstill lately. Running has been giving me a pain in my knee for 14 days and I’ve been trying to be a good little runner and let it rest.
Today I finally had my appointment with the University of Miami’s Sports Med Clinic and was told I have IT Band Syndrome (Iliotibial band syndrome). Apparently very common in people (especially first-timers) training for marathons. (Look at me! I’m a cliché!) I was told I can cross-train and do physical therapy, but no real training-running for about FOUR weeks. Four weeks, people!! I am beside myself freaking out. I needed every moment up until November 3rd to get myself mentally and physically ready to tackle the race, now I am only going to have one less month??? Can I do this?? I know cross-training is good and recommended while you are running, but for that to be your only cardio training?? I am at a loss.
Feeling sad and defeated. So tonight, before I call for reinforcement (i.e. a personal trainer) tomorrow, my therapy starts with chardonnay and broccoli and spinach take-out pizza. Because clearly, pizza loves me.
