The first week of school is under our belt, and I have to say that Operation Dinner Table is going far better than I ever imagined. With one minor exception. I had a retirement party to attend Wednesday night, so the nanny fed the girls dinner and let them watch a show. Seems that it slipped the Misses minds to tell our beloved nanny M about my new policy… When asked, they clearly knew it was wrong, but I let it slide as the rest of the week went so well…
I have a few things waiting in the wings recipe-wise to share with you, but in the meantime, here is a little recap of things from the past week:
This was my souvenir from North Carolina:
Ten pounds of North Carolina peaches (for about $20!!) packed into the back of our car. Heaven. We went to an awesome farmers market in Banner Elk, NC where I scored a ridiculously cheap quart of fresh blackberries (think a GALLON for $12!! Sigh.) that came home with us, too.
The peaches and blackberries went into this recipe for Blackberry-Peach Cobbler Bars from Southern LIving’s June 2013 issue. A really delicious way to use up a summer bounty of fruit. I omitted the candied pecans, but think I’ll include them next time. (At least on half, D doesn’t like…) Really good with vanilla ice cream!
I made these super delicious Kale and Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for D and I last week. Really easy, and so good that I made myself another one on the panini press the next night when D was out at a late meeting.
I started reading a blog called Dinner: A Love Story that I stumbled upon a while ago. I wish I had found it sooner! The author is (among other things) a former features director at Cookie magazine, which I really loved and was so sorry when they folded. She is, obviously, a huge proponent of the family dinner and fits so well into my new plans for Operation Dinner Table. I used one of her recipes last week to great acclaim. (More on that later!) Anyway, one of the DALS most recent posts is about 50 Rules for Vacation and it is hilarious. Every rule is spot on, from the beard (#36) to everything else!! Love.
Hope you all had a great week! Looking forward to another good one!
